Variation IV: Andante grazioso

Variation VII e Coda: Allegro vivo
Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations are among his most classically inspired compositions. Written in homage to Mozart, whom he deeply admired, Tchaikovsky composed an original theme in the elegant style of the 18th century. This Rococo theme is followed by seven variations and a concluding coda, offering the solo cellist ample opportunity for lyrical expression and virtuosic display.
Originally scored for solo cello and full orchestra including winds and brass, the arrangement by David Walter reimagines the work for cello and string orchestra. This version brings out the chamber-like character of the piece and enhances the clarity of the musical dialogue between soloist and ensemble.
Though not strictly modeled on classical variation form, each section explores a distinct character – playful, lyrical, melancholic, or dazzling. The result is a richly nuanced arc of music that combines Tchaikovsky’s gift for melody with a refined sense of structure.
